Mineral Ridge sees significant decline in patient virus cases

MINERAL RIDGE — A Mineral Ridge nursing home saw a significant drop in the number of coronavirus cases this week, compared to last week.

Continuing Healthcare at the Ridge went from seven patient cases last week to three this week and from seven staff cases last week to zero this week.

It led the way to a decrease in the overall Trumbull County nursing home cases — with patient cases dropping from 11 to five and staff cases dropping from nine to one.

The number of coronavirus cases in Mahoning County nursing homes and assisted-living facilities also dropped this week — from 50 patient cases last week to 39 this week and from 12 staff cases last week to eight this week.

The number of patient cases in Ohio nursing homes as a whole rose significantly, however — from 778 last week to 968 this week. Nursing home staff cases in the state rose slightly — from 537 last week to 551 this week.

Meanwhile, Mahoning County still has the fourth-highest number of coronavirus nursing home deaths in the state at 169, up one from last week.

Trumbull still has the eighth-highest number at 55, up eight from last week.

Columbiana County’s nursing home deaths still are at 32 — the same as last week.

The most nursing home deaths in Ohio are in Franklin County with 340, Lucas with 191 and Cuyahoga at 221.

Meanwhile, the number of inmates at the Trumbull Correctional Institution in Leavittsburg with the coronavirus dropped again in the past week — from 14 last week to 11 on Wednesday.

The previous week, the number of inmate cases dropped from 54 to 14.

Two of the state’s 28 prisons now have more current virus cases than TCI. The Northeast Ohio Correctional Center on Hubbard Road in Youngstown now has 12 inmate cases. No inmates at either facility have died. The highest number of cases is at the Chillicothe Correctional Institution with 70.
