The number of coronavirus cases in Mahoning County nursing homes and assisted living facilities has risen — from 37 patient cases two weeks ago to 45 this week, and from nine staff cases two weeks ago to 10 this week.
In Trumbull County, the number of patient cases this week is 11, and the staff cases number is three, according to newly released data from the Ohio Department of Health. By comparison, the facilities had 26 patient cases and 10 staff cases during a week in late June.
Sandy Swann, nursing director for the Trumbull County Combined Health District, said earlier this week she expected there to be sizeable increases in the number of virus cases at two Trumbull County nursing homes.
But on Thursday she said one of the nursing homes — Continuing Healthcare at the Ridge in Mineral Ridge — did not provide its numbers in time, so its increases are not reflected in the new data.
She released new data on virus cases as a whole showing that Trumbull County has had 195 total new virus cases through the first 15 days of July, suggesting that the July total for the month will be much higher than the 319 new cases in June, 259 cases in May, 271 cases in April and 59 cases in March.
Trumbull County has had 14 new deaths overall in July, suggesting that July will have many more deaths than the 18 in both June and May and about the same number as the 29 in April.
The number of patient cases in Ohio nursing homes as a whole rose — from 708 two weeks ago to 779 this week. Nursing home staff cases in the state also rose — from 370 two weeks ago to 527 this week.
Meanwhile, Mahoning County has the fourth-highest number of coronavirus deaths in the state at 160 and Trumbull has the eighth-highest number at 43. The number of nursing home deaths in Trumbull County rose from 29 two weeks ago to 43 this week.
The most nursing home deaths in Ohio are in Franklin County with 308; Lucas with 189; and Cuyahoga at 188. The fifth-highest number is 147 in Summit.
Columbiana County’s nursing home deaths are at 31 — the same as two weeks ago.
