Hagan picks up pro-life backing in congressional race against Ryan
Christina Hagan, the Republican nominee in the 13th Congressional District race, picked up another endorsement from a pro-life organization.
The candidate fund political action committee of the Susan B. Anthony List, the largest national pro-life political organization, announced its support Tuesday of Hagan of Marlboro Township. Hagan is the only congressional candidate in Ohio so far to receive the organization’s endorsement.
The Ohio Right to Life PAC, the political action committee for the state’s oldest and largest pro-life organization, endorsed her last month.
Hagan is challenging U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Howland, a nine-term incumbent, in the November election.
“She is a champion for the cause of life,” said Sue Liebel, SBA’s state police director and coordinator of its National Pro-Life Women’s Caucus. “She is the model of the pro-life, pro-woman candidate w support.”
Hagan was a member of SBA’s Pro-Life Caucus during her time in the Ohio House and had a 100 percent voting record with the organization.
Hagan said the SBA List recognizes “the stark contrast between my voting record against my opponent’s and the importance of electing leaders with sincere values.”
She added: “We need someone in Washington who will stand firm for the most vulnerable of our population, not someone whose values are swayed by political forces.”
While in the House, Hagan sponsored the heartbeat bill that bans abortion at the point when a fetal heartbeat can be detected. She testified in favor of it in 2018 while having her twins in a cloth sling across her body.
Ryan changed his position from pro-life to pro-choice in January 2015 saying that discussions with women over time about the reasons for having an abortion led to his decision.
He’s been endorsed by NARAL Pro-Choice America, the nation’s oldest pro-choice organization. Ryan has a 100 percent score from NARAL.
“Tim Ryan’s record speaks for itself on respecting women, women’s reproductive rights and the choices made between a woman, her family and her physician,” said Dennis Willard, his campaign spokesman.
Ryan’s campaign has used Hagan’s anti-choice voting record as a way to raise money for his re-election effort.
“There’s a clear distinction between (Hagan) and Rep. Ryan in this race,” Liebel said. “He has an F rating on our score card while she has maintained a strong leadership record.”
