Austintown voters to face two renewal school levies

AUSTINTOWN — Two tax levies that together account for about 10 percent of the Austintown school district’s operating budget will be up for renewal on the Nov. 3 ballot.

The board of education on Friday unanimously approved submitting the two levies to the Mahoning County Board of Elections.

The five-year, 4.9-mill levy originally passed in 1991 generates $1,850,247 annually for the school district. Another five-year levy, originally approved in 1996 at 7.3 mills, generates $3,304,363 annually, according to district Treasurer Blaise Karlovic.

“They’re not new money. We’ve had them since 1991 and 1996, and they are for the continued operation of our district,” Karlovic said. “They’ll continue to allow us to provide an excellent education to Austintown residents.”

Because the value of houses has increased and the levies generate set amounts of money, the current millage of the levies will sit more around 2.8, and just above 5, he explained.

The district has a few other continuing levies, which also support its operation. Karlovic said the district operates within its means.

“And we really do appreciate the continued support of the Austintown families,” Austintown schools Superintendent David Cappuzzello added.
