Man pleads guilty to fraud, forgery

YOUNGSTOWN — Nicholas J. Pupino, 83, of Clingan Road, pleaded guilty Tuesday to unlawful securities practices and forgery and was sentenced to six months of electronically monitored house arrest.

He also paid about $50,000 in restitution.

Pupino was indicted following an investigation by the Ohio Department of Commerce. Prosecutors alleged Pupino accepted checks from an elderly woman totaling nearly $100,000 and told her that her funds would be invested into accounts with known insurance companies. She was told the investment would generate funds to pay future nursing home expenses or to pass to her beneficiaries upon her death.

Instead, Pupino deposited the money into his personal bank account, the Ohio Department of Commerce said.

The forgery charge stated that Pupino added his name to the payee line of the checks after the victim signed them so Pupino could deposit them into his own account.
