Man arrested after damaging MVSD truck

AUSTINTOWN — Joseph Sanders, 60, 212 Navarre Ave., was arrested Thursday on several warrants after a June 16 incident in which he caused an estimated $3,500 of damage to a Mahoning Valley Sanitary District truck.

Officers were sent to a house in the 200 block of Navarre Avenue after reports of a man with a pipe beating a white vehicle in a driveway, according to a police report.

“Numerous items were strewn about the yard and porch,” reads the report, which goes on to state Sanders — with a painted face and “draped in the flag of England” — came out of a garage screaming about the government and wielding a pipe. Police believed he was having a “mental episode.”

Sanders locked himself inside the garage while family, friends and police attempted to communicate with him. Several times he threatened that he was opening the valves on propane tanks in the garage, the report states.

The vehicle Sanders beat belonged to the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District. Two employees told police they were doing work on North Four Mile Run Road when they heard yelling. Men from the Youngstown Water Department pulled up and told the MVSD employees Sanders had been throwing rocks at their truck. Sanders first went after the water department employees then the sanitary district employee in the truck.

Police arrested Sanders at St. Elizabeth Youngs-town Hospital on four active warrants related to the incident, including vandalism and aggravated menacing, according to court records.
