Poland family keeps neighbors entertained

POLAND — When parts of the economy began to shut down months ago due to the pandemic, Brian Stanley took the opportunity to make his neighbors smile.

With the help of his 7-year-old son, Cameron, Brian has found a way to engage the family dogs, Ripley and Burger King, with the world on the other side of the tall wood fence that lines the yard on the corner of Island Drive and Sheridan Road.

“I cut a hole in the fence because he was very curious about who was walking up and down the road,” he said.

The idea was met with enthusiasm from Burger. The husky and golden retriever mix had started digging under the fence to get to the other side.

“I thought he’d get a kick out of it and sure enough, I cut the hole and his face was through it,” Brian said.

Initially, the hole in the fence was just that — and Brian said that when he was home from work for a couple of months when he got the idea to frame the hole for passers-by to look at when they go by.

He thought to start a project, which led to the first painting, “The Scream,” by Edvard Munch, which is Brian’s favorite painting.

Renaming his interpretation “The Bark,” Brian posted it to social media, which was met with overwhelming positive reactions.

His next idea was a take on “Jaws” as “Paws.”

“Instead of ‘Jaws,’ we made it with a bone and not a person,'” said Cameron, who helps his dad matching the colors when Brian paints.

“Everybody likes it,” Cameron said. “It slows down traffic” along the road, he noted.

His mom, Mallory said that the dogs, especially Burger, have enjoyed the attention. “People give him treats, take selfies,” she said.

Seeing that people were snapping pictures with Burger, Brian began an Instagram account, dogs.with.a.view, which chronicles the dogs’ days along with new creations.

“With everything going on, I just thought I’d post it out there and give them a laugh when they’re walking by,” Brian said.

Burger came from New Lease on Life in Struthers, which names litters by a theme. A fast-food theme came up with Burger’s litter. Burgers also happen to be Cameron’s favorite fast food.
