Boardman sets commencement for Sunday
Staff report
BOARDMAN — Commencement for the Spartan Class of 2020 will be Sunday, with the in-person portion of the ceremony held for the first time on the field inside Boardman Spartan Stadium — one family at a time.
Commencement will be a hybrid, both virtual and in person. The virtual presentation of graduation speeches, about 30 minutes, will begin promptly at noon as people watch from home.
The first of four groups of graduates will then head to the stadium for the in-person family event. Each hour, a new group will arrive to assigned parking spots on campus and be excused from their vehicles one family at a time to receive their diploma.
This is expected to take about four hours to confer diplomas to the 320-member graduating class.
Graduates may be accompanied by up to four family members, and all social-distancing guidelines will be enforced.
The graduation ceremony will be livestreamed Sunday via Drund and 21-WFMJ beginning at noon. An edited and produced version of the entire graduation celebration (about two hours) will be released live at 7 p.m. June 12. Links can be found at BSTNtv.com/livestream and WFMJ.com.
The class has earned and accepted more than $3.6 million in scholarships, according to the school district.
Seventeen students are honored as “first in class,” earning a perfect 4.0 GPA during their high school career. At least 15 seniors are pursuing military careers with scholarships.
Other notable accomplishments of the class of 2020 include:
• 81 students earned honors diplomas for rigorous coursework completed;
• 110 students are honors graduates with a 3.5 grade point average or above;
• 70 seniors also earned the President’s Award for Educational Excellence for superior academic achievement in math and reading.
