Youngstown woman jailed in Easter killing of Kent man

YOUNGSTOWN — Jillian L. Russell, 36, is in the Mahoning County jail in connection with the shooting death of Marcus D. Turnage on Sunday evening at Russell’s Lakewood Avenue home.

Police were called to 513 Lakewood at 7:40 p.m. for an unknown problem and were met in the street by a woman and two additional people. Russell was among the three.

Police were advised someone had died inside the home and found Turnage, 38, of Meloy Road in Kent, inside, apparently dead from an unknown number of gunshot wounds. No one else was in the home.

Police said they learned an argument broke out inside among the four people, and Russell shot Turnage.

Police detained and interviewed people there. Turnage was pronounced dead at the scene by ambulance personnel, and other police and county coroner’s personnel were called to investigate.

Russell was booked into the jail later Sunday, but police were still consulting Monday with prosecutors on the charges Russell will face. Youngstown Municipal Court personnel said Wednesday is the first day when an arraignment can take place. The court is closed today.

Court records do not list Russell being charged with any new offenses, but a Youngstown police report states Russell is being held on a charge of murder.

Capt. Brad Blackburn of the Youngstown Police Department said Russell and Turnage are “family friends” and did not live together. Blackburn characterized the four people as having a “small gathering,” but he would not provide additional details.

The Youngstown Police Records Department said no other police reports relate to the Lakewood address over the past year. It is located just south of the county-owned Oak Hill county government building on Oak Hill Avenue.

In July 2018, Judge Maureen Sweeney of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court sentenced Russell to one year of probation after she pleaded guilty to misdemeanor receiving stolen property and misdemeanor carrying a concealed weapon.

The convictions are related to a Nov. 23, 2017, theft of items from the Macy’s store in Southern Park Mall.

Police said a store security officer observed Russell selecting a sweatshirt and 11 other pieces of merchandise totaling $703 then going through a register, where an employee pretended to scan the items but did not. Then Russell walked out of the store with the items.

The security officer apprehended Russell outside of the store. When police arrived, they learned she had a concealed-carry permit and found a handgun in her purse that she had not told police about. Russell’s probation for the offense ended last July.

The cashier, Shelby M. Storey, then 22, of Atlanta, was charged and later convicted of theft.

Russell also has a pending complicity charge in Mahoning County Area Court in Austintown related to a Nov. 25 theft from the Austintown Giant Eagle.
