Coughing theft suspect released

YOUNGSTOWN — Police detained, but later released, a Madison Avenue man, on Tuesday after finding him near an abandoned, stolen van.

Police were called to the intersection of Indianola and Hunter avenue at 9:45 a.m. for a man driving a white van and wearing a surgical mask. The man who called police told them the vehicle was his work van and it was stolen at 4 a.m. from Boardman, according to a police report.

An officer located the van, which had damage, in the 2700 block of Tampa Avenue with the engine running and door open. Officers located the suspect, 35, in the driveway of a house on Hunter. Police went there and the resident told police she didn’t know the man, the report states.

He met the description of the man and had a credit card and ID card that had recently been stolen in Boardman.

Boardman police arrived at the scene, but because the man was “coughing really hard and due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” the man was released and advised Boardman police would be in contact with him.
