Bridge coming to Poland Forest soon, officials say

POLAND — As long as supplies are available, an improved foot bridge should be coming to the Poland Municipal Forest.

Sam Moffie, a councilman for Poland vVllage, said during a conference call-style meeting Tuesday that Mauthe Bridge could be “up and ready by the end of the month.”

“It’s going to be great. Better than can be expected,” he said.

The bridge, which stretches over Yellow Creek in the forest, has been closed for nearly two years after an engineering study showed it was unsafe.

Estimated cost of the project, which is being completed by Murphy Contracting Co. of Youngstown, is about $90,000.

Also during the meeting, COVID-19 and its impact on the community was discussed.

Councilman Mike Thompson motioned to extend the closure of village hall, excuse non-essential personnel and extend the time people have to pay their violations.

Those who have violations to pay will have until the expiration of the governor’s stay-at-home order.

He also moved to continue the cancellation of board and commission meetings until the expiration of the stay-at-home order, now set for May 1.

During his turn speaking, however, Thompson did not mention a date in his motion.

“I deliberately didn’t say May 1,” he said, as the stay-at-home order could be extended, as it previously was set for April 6.
