Mother charged with murder in son’s death

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN — The murder and other indictments filed Thursday against Sharday L. Bing Dixon, 33, of Eighth Street in Struthers and Derek Carter Jr., 27, of Wilson Avenue in Campbell, followed autopsy results from the Summit County Coroner’s Office.

Sebali Bing Dixon, 2, was taken from a home on Dennick Avenue to a hospital Oct. 4, 2018, after a report that the child was not breathing, police said. He died a short time later at Akron Children’s Hospital in Akron.

The Summit County Coroner’s Office ruled about five months later that the boy’s death was a homicide. The extent of the boy’s injuries only became clear as a result of the autopsy, police said.

Bing Dixon, the boy’s mother, was indicted Thursday on charges of murder, child endangering and permitting child abuse.

The permitting child-abuse charge alleges she caused serious physical harm or death to the boy “as a proximate result of permitting the child to be abused, to be tortured, to be administered corporal punishment or other physical disciplinary measure, or to be physically restrained in a cruel manner or for a prolonged period.”

The murder charge Bing Dixon faces alleges she caused the death of her child by “permitting child abuse,” whereas Carter’s murder charge states he caused the death by “endangering children.”

Each adult faces the same child-endangering charge, which states each did “recklessly abuse” the boy.
