United Airlines sponsors Vienna aviation team

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN — Executives and maintenance staff from United Airlines visited Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics on Wednesday and announced a major sponsorship for the aviation maintenance school’s competition team.

The donation of $10,000 is the largest sponsorship PIA Youngstown has ever received. It will cover a hotel for four nights for five people, five round-trip tickets to Dallas, five round-trip tickets to Houston or Chicago for training, a banquet reception, registration fee and travel for coaches.

The sponsorship shows United’s commitment to helping PIA train the next generation of quality aviation maintenance technicians, the airline said in a news release.

From April 28-30, a team of five students and two PIA faculty coaches will travel to Dallas for the campus’ third year participating in the annual Aerospace Maintenance Competition. The AMC provides an opportunity for current and future maintenance professionals to showcase their abilities and see how they stack up against peers across the country.

Five-member teams compete in competitive events.

In addition to financial support, aviation maintenance professionals from United will train and mentor students from PIA. The AMC competition features a significant presence among aviation and aerospace industry employers. Competing teams from the military, commercial aviation, manufacturing, education and the space industry will be present.

The Aerospace Maintenance Council, a nonprofit organization, promotes and supports the aerospace maintenance community. The council’s flagstone event, the Aerospace Maintenance Competition presented by Snap-On, recognizes and celebrates the aviation maintenance technician, and the knowledge and skill required to maintain safe, airworthy aircraft worldwide.
