Man, 25, arraigned in sex case

YOUNGSTOWN — Andrew S. Strickland, 25, of Cambridge Avenue in Youngstown, was arraigned Wednesday in federal court on sexual exploitation of children, after authorities say he convinced a teenager to commit a sex act on an infant.

According to an FBI complaint, a resident of Farmdale reported to the Trumbull County Sheriff’s office that the sex act was committed by a girl, 16, in July, apparently in a camper parked in Springfield, Ohio.

The girl told a Trumbull County deputy that Strickland communicated with her through Facebook Messenger, asking her to send him nude photos of herself.

She declined but later committed the sex act at Strickland’s suggestion out of fear that Strickland would harm her or her family if she didn’t. She recorded it on her cell phone and sent it to Strickland, she said.

Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge John Durkin later authorized a search warrant for Facebook accounts associated with Strickland and the girl.

Judge Maureen Sweeney also later authorized the search of Strickland’s cell phone and other electronics.

Strickland told investigators he met the girl on Facebook in July.

Magistrate Judge George Limbert in federal court ordered Strickland detained and set his next hearing for 2 p.m. March 4.
