Defendant ruled able to stand trial Feb. 3

YOUNGSTOWN — The man accused of shooting a man last June on Youngstown’s West Side on Friday was ruled competent to stand trial.

Mahoning County Common Pleas Court Judge Maureen Sweeney determined that defendant Matt Reid, 34, is able to face felony charges including attempted murder, felonious assault, improperly discharging a weapon and having weapons as a convicted felon. Sweeney set the trial to begin at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 3.

In October, Sweeney had sought a mental health evaluation on the defendant at the Forensic Psychiatric Center of Northeast Ohio in Austintown.

If convicted, Reid could face a maximum 30-year prison sentence. He is accused of shooting 58-year-old James Thorpe in Thorpe’s Steel Street home on June 12, 2019.

Thorpe was found on his living room couch and was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound. The victim underwent surgery and is recovering, a report from WFMJ-TV 21 shows.

Reid, who was arrested June 15, remains in custody at the Mahoning County Justice Center pending the posting of a $100,000 bond.
