Austintown school board: Open enrollment OK’d for ’20-21

WHAT: Board of Education meeting Wednesday

PRESENT: Don Sherwood, Robin Krempasky, Kathy Mock, Harold Porter and Kim Smrek

The board:

l Swore in new board member Smrek and returning board member Harold Porter;

l Named Don Sherwood president and Robin Krempasky vice president for the year;

l Set board meetings for the third Thursday of the month, with exceptions noted on the board website;

l Established a $4,000 service fund to make reimbursements to members of the board for expenses for duties performed outside the district;

l Approved Austintown Local School District being an open enrollment district again for the 2020-21 school year;

l Retained Ennis Britton; Gingo and Bair, LLC; Squire, Patton, and Boggs; and Walter and Haverfield as legal counsel for the district as needed;

l Approved the continued participation in state and federal grant programs;

l Approved a master agreement with Side Effects Inc. for electronic scoring and/or advertising equipment for the district;

l Approved Teresa Emmerling for continued fiscal support through the Mahoning Valley Regional Council of Governments;

l Approved the resignations of Nicole Vasco and James Gibson;

lApproved Debra Koperdak to transfer from a nine-month, 5.75-hour sweeper cleaner post at Austintown Intermediate School to a nine-month, 5.75-hour paraprofessional post effective Jan. 6, replacing Danette Lobel. Approved Laurie Gartland to transfer from Austintown Elementary 10-month secretary to Austintown Middle School 12-month secretary, effective Jan. 2;

lAppointed Caroline Kishton as a Falcon Pride online music teacher with a salary of $120 per student enrolled in a two-semester course and $60 per student enrolled in a one-semester course plus a one-time $50 set-up fee;

l Appointed Lisa Marie Keriotis as a district English language learner tutor at $16 an hour, 5.75 hours per day, five days a week, and appointed AEA members Allison Jones and Jim Penk home instruction tutors at $18.10 per hour;

l Appointed Jack Polito as a district bus driver, Sabrina Bliss, pre-kindergarten teacher assistant, and Amanda Potkonicky as EWS coordinator at Austintown Elementary and Intermediate, all effective Jan. 6;

l Approved a bus washing position at $15 per bus for a total of 60 vehicles, one time per month from January through May 2020. The position will be filled through the Mahoning County Regional Council of Governments (MVRCOG);

l Appointed the following coaches: Nate Armstrong III as a Fitch assistant track-weight, Joe Paris as Fitch head baseball, Steve Ward as Fitch softball, Brian Forgac as Middle School head wrestling and Middle School boys track; Brad Clyde as Middle School boys track, John Hudson as Middle School girls assistant track, and Jeff Gessler as Middle School girls assistant track;

l Appointed volunteers Lisa Frederick as a swim team coach and Donald Kocher as a classroom aide at Austintown Intermediate.

l Appointed Dane Carter as a substitute bus driver and Jack Polito as a substitute bus aide;

l Approved a memorandum of understanding with OAPSE Local 194 for the federally funded summer food service program;

l Approved a clinical affiliation program with Stark State College of North Canton for use of Austintown facilities for the dietetic technician program;

l Approved participation in the college credit plus program through Kent State University;

l Approved continued membership in the Ohio High School Athletic Association;

l Approved Mahoning Valley Skywarn to use the Fitch auditorium for tornado-spotting training with a meteorologist from the Cleveland National Weather Service in March or April

l Approved an agreement with the MVRCOG, which will provide a career counselor to the school two days per week through the 2019-2020 school year.
