Suspicious fire destroys playground in Campbell

Staff report

CAMPBELL — Wooden playground equipment at the corner of Jackson and Jean streets in the Michael J. Kirwan Homes apartments burned in a fire Saturday night.

The fire was reported at 8:32 p.m. Police officers located it, and the Campbell and Struthers fire departments were called out to extinguish it.

The fire resulted in the playground being a total loss, said Capt. Gene Skelley. An accelerant appears to have been used, but Campbell fire investigators are still investigating it, Skelley said.

Most of structure was made out of wood, but the rubber base also burned, which was probably the reason some people reported that they heard a “popping” sound, Skelley said. No one was injured.
