GM to make announcement this morning

Could involve battery-cell production in Lordstown

WARREN — General Motors, which has indicated plans to bring electric vehicle battery-cell production to Lordstown or nearby, plans to make an announcement today.

The Vindicator is invited, and will participate in a conference call with GM CEO and Chairwoman Mary Barra at 9 a.m.

Details of the call were scarce Wednesday, when GM asked if the newspaper would be interested in participating in the press briefing.

Neither U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan’s office; state Sen. Sean O’Brien, D-Bazetta; Tim O’Hara, president of United Auto Workers Local 1112; nor Lordstown Mayor Arno Hill could provide particulars on the announcement.

Ryan, D-Howland, however, postponed Wednesday’s press conference call on local economic development and other items until today.

The GM Lordstown facility produced its last Chevrolet Cruze on March 6. It was the first of three plants GM closed in the U.S. as it shifts its production focus toward trucks, SUVs and electric vehicles.

The 6.2 million-square-foot facility was bought for a reported $20 million in November by Lordstown Motors Corp., which plans on starting production of an all-electric battery-powered commercial and passenger pickup truck in late 2020.

The automaker has said it is committed to future investment in Ohio, including plans to bring battery-cell production to Lordstown or nearby. The facility would bring about 1,000 jobs to the area.

The proposal is not part of the contract GM and UAW negotiated earlier this year. Speculation at the time from sources familiar with the situation was that negotiators shied away from including it to avoid setting a precedent for lesser-paying jobs, which are expected to be in the neighborhood of $17 per hour. The top wage earners at the assembly plant earned about $30 per hour.

Meanwhile, GM is in talks with South Korea-based electric battery pack and cell maker LG Chem to locate a battery-cell production facility in the Mahoning Valley. The partnership would be a joint venture between the companies.

LG already has a plant in Holland, Mich., where it makes battery cells and packs for GM.

GM did not confirm discussion between it and LG Chem.
