Boardman doctor indicted on drug-documents charge

YOUNGSTOWN — Dr. Stephen Crowe, whose medical practice is in Boardman, is indicted on a charge of illegal processing of drug documents.

The indictment for Crowe, 50, of Woodland Place in Canfield, accuses him of knowingly making a false statement Oct. 4, 2017, for writing a prescription for a controlled substance. The charge is a fifth-degree felony, punishable by up to a year in prison if convicted.

Mike Yacovone, assistant county prosecutor, said Crowe is alleged to have written a prescription for an employee for a face cream, described as “a dangerous drug or compound” in the indictment. The employee then gave the medication to Crowe.

Crowe, whose offices are at 721 Boardman Poland Road No. 204, has held a medical license since 2004, and his license is active, according to the Ohio Medical Board. His office has the name Crossroads Sleep Disorders Center, but Crowe is listed as a family medicine doctor.

Yacovone said the charge resulted from an investigation by the Ohio Board of Pharmacy of the employee, Kristy J. Rice, 46, of East Broadway in Girard, who was convicted in August of illegal processing of drug documents.

Judge Anthony D’Apolito of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court allowed Rice to enter a program that involves at least one year of treatment for substance abuse and mental health issues with the opportunity to have her convictions eliminated if she completes the program successfully.

Her plea agreement requires her to cooperate with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy, Boardman Police Department and any other agencies involved in any other pending proceedings.

A call to Dr. Crowe’s office was not returned.
