Austintown man injured after stepping off Market Street bridge

YOUNGSTOWN — A man walked out of Youngstown Municipal Court before a 10:30 a.m. court hearing Thursday and stepped off the Market Street bridge, despite a police officer’s attempts to intervene.

Daniel Nelson-Harnevious, 24, of Austintown, was transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital by ambulance conscious, but with “visible trauma” to his left arm, according to a Youngstown Police Department incident report.

Youngstown police blocked traffic from the bridge for about an hour.

Police were called at 9:56 a.m. to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge over the Mahoning River and the Huntington Bank Community Alley, which is near the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre and behind Youngstown Municipal Court.

The police were called because a man and his grandmother walked out of the court and were arguing. Officer Mike Brindisi spotted Nelson-Harnevious on the west side of the bridge and tried to talk to him, but the man did not engage with him.

“Nelson-Harnevious stepped over the railing and onto the ledge of the bridge,” the report states.

“The officer continued to try and communicate with Mr. Nelson-Harnevious, however he would not respond. Without warning, Mr. Nelson-Harnevious jumped from the bridge’s ledge and landed (on) a sidewalk which is part of the amphitheater down below,” the report states.

Damon Cortez was driving to the Mahoning County Courthouse for his work in the substance use and recovery field when he saw a young man standing on the other side of the bridge railing.

“I hope he is all right,” Cortez said.

The man’s court hearing was rescheduled for 10:30 a.m. Jan. 28. In July, he pleaded guilty to a charge of menacing. He was required to forfeit a machete and to receive a mental health assessment and mental health treatment, according to court records. He was also fined and placed on 18 months of basic probation.

In October, a “possible probation violation” was reported to the court. The hearing Thursday was to determine if there was probable cause for the violation report, according to court records.
