Youngstown man sentenced for assault on friend

YOUNGSTOWN — Brandon S. Smith, 31 of South Heights Avenue was sentenced Thursday to six months in the Mahoning County Justice Center and 60 days of house arrest for assaulting another man with a board at work in May.

Smith and the victim were friends, but in May, they got into an argument at Dinesol Plastics, and Smith swung the board at the victim about seven times. At least one of the swings hit the victim in the head, causing a laceration, said Joe Maxin, assistant Mahoning County prosecutor.

Smith was indicted on felonious assault but pleaded guilty earlier to the lesser offense of aggravated assault.

The victim wanted Smith to serve his sentence in the county jail instead of prison, Maxin said. Smith is required to get anger management counseling, have no contact with the victim and complete the Mahoning County Sheriff’s commun
