‘This Old House” focuses on Canfield’s Baird Brothers today

CANFIELD — A hardwood company with a presence in the Mahoning Valley going back nearly 60 years will be featured on today’s episode of the “This Old House Hour.”

Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods will appear in a segment about how the company, which is providing doors, moulding and white oak flooring for a series project in Westerly, R.I., when the show airs locally at 8 a.m. on PBS.

“‘This Old House’ came out in mid-July, and they filmed basically a plant tour of how we process raw material and raw lumber into finished products,” said Michael Knoedler, director of technology and accounts receivable for Baird Brothers. “Mainly the doors is what they are focusing on, but it talks about some of the rough mill areas to see how we process the lumber that makes trim and everything like that, but the focus of the episode is about the hardwood doors that we make.”

On the show, host Kevin O’Connor meets with owner Terry Baird and then tours the Crory Road business with sales director Steve Stack to see how the four-paneled doors are made for the World War II-era Westerly, R.I., house, which is being transformed from a ranch into Dutch colonial.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our company, and we are soaking in every second,” said Baird on a Baird Brothers blog post. “When you think about it, it’s pretty amazing for a company with humble beginnings to be featured on a nationally televised program, and we’re proud to have partnered with ‘This Old House’ on several projects within the past couple of years.”

The company also supplied material for the show’s Cape Ann house in Manchester-by-the-Sea in Massachusetts and the Idea House in New Canaan, Conn., according to the show.

“We did some projects, were featured in a couple sidebar articles in the magazine … back in 2010, 2012 and then more recently, it would be the end of 2017, they had reached out, and we started working together with them at the beginning of 2018,” Knoedler said.

The Westerly house is the third project Baird has done with Sweenor Builders, a well-known design / builder with “This Old House.”

“This gives us the opportunity to expand our exposure. They’ve got a great following. ‘This Old House’ kind of has an insider club like the rock band groupies that really follow them closely,” Knoedler said. “‘This Old House’ has a very trusted brand for educating people. Their personalities are not just personalities; they are actual contractors.”

The Baird brothers — Howard, Paul and Richard — started the company cutting rough lumber from a mill they repaired on their family’s farm in the 1960s. The company reached several milestones in the last 59 years, including starting a moulding plant in 1972 and rebuilding from a devastating fire in 1988. The company now employs about 120 workers and ships products across the U.S. and into Canada.
