STRUTHERS -- Fire broke out in a 371 Sexton St. home just before 4 p.m. Friday, and a 3-month-old boy is hospitalized.
An Ohio Edison employee told 21-WFMJ that he was working in the area when he noticed smoke. He then saw the mother in the garage and told her that the house was on fire.
The woman then went inside. After calling 911, the Ohio Edison employee then saw the woman come out of the other side of the home with the baby.
He said the baby's face was badly burned, and the boy was barely breathing.
The infant, his mother and a firefighter were transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. The infant was then flown to Akron Children's Hospital in Akron.
It is unknown if the mother suffered any injuries. A firefighter suffered a laceration to his hand, according to Ken Sabol, Struthers engineer
firefighter.
The fire hydrant located near the home was not working, and hoses had to be hooked up down the street. This did not delay putting out the fire because Aqua Ohio notified the fire department earlier that day, Sabol said.
It took almost two hours to control the fire, he said. The first floor was controlled in about 15 minutes, but the firefighters had to chase it through the second floor to the attic.
The house was destroyed and there was some damage to the house next door.
The Campbell and Poland fire departments assisted.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Mahoning County Arson Task Force.
