Seeing Eye: Lecture on Russia set at Boardman Library on Saturday

BOARDMAN SOCIETY: The Boardman Historical Society will meet 10 a.m. Saturday at the Boardman Library. The speaker will be Dr. Howard Mettee, retired Youngstown State University professor, who will speak on “Citizen Bridges Between Russia and America.”

Mettee grew up in Massachusetts and New Jersey. He joined YSU’s Department of Chemistry in 1968 and taught physical chemistry until he retired.

In 1994, he organized an exchange delegation of officers, a trustee and faculty from YSU to four universities in Russia. More recently Mettee served as president of the Russia-United States Intercountry Committee of Rotary International.

Through Dr. Mettee’s connections and organizational skills, the Boardman Rotary has hosted more than a dozen delegations from Russia. On Saturday, he will share memories of his trips to Russia and the numerous exchanges between Russia and the Mahoning Valley.

SALEM SOCIETY EVENT: Salem Historical Society will hold an open house 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday with the theme “Veteran Appreciation” gift / book shop. Freedom Hall will be featured with its military emphasis from the Civil War to the present during the same hours.

The monthly meeting will be 7 p.m. Nov. 12. Harold Ryther will present “The Christmas Letter,” a service member’s letter home, and the USS Oklahoma Remains Preservation Project.

The program will follow a short business meeting held in Dale Shaffer Library meeting room, 239 South Lundy Ave.

NIGHT IN BELGRADE: The Circle of Serbian Sisters will be the guest performers for the annual Night in Belgrade dinner dance 5:30 to 7p.m. Saturday. The Avala Folklore Group from Youngstown will be joined by the St. Nicholas Folklore Group from Monroeville, Pa. Dinner music and dance music will be provided by Orkestar Zabava of Pittsburgh.

The cost of the dinner is $30 for adults, $10 for children 7 to 12 and free for children 6 and younger. Dance-only tickets are $10. Reservations are a must and can be made at 330-799-7736.

TIME BANK: Time Bank Mahoning Watershed has canceled its luncheon for Monday, with members invited to attend the Energy and the Environmental speaker series at Youngstown State University.
