Patrol seeking search warrants for three vehicles in gunfire probe

YOUNGSTOWN — Ohio State Highway Patrol investigators have three vehicles in their custody and are working to secure search warrants to determine whether they were involved in gunfire last week that threatened two troopers.

Lt. Jerad Sutton of the patrol’s Office of Criminal Investigations said investigators also have a “person of interest” in the case.

Two officers who work with the investigative unit’s vehicle theft and fraud unit were fired upon at around 2 p.m. Friday while they carrying out investigative duties at the intersection of West Warren Avenue and Summer Street near the Youngstown Playhouse on the city’s South Side.

No one was injured. It is not believed the officer’s unmarked vehicle was hit by the gunfire, but that will be determined conclusively later, Sutton said.

He credited the assistance of the Youngstown Police Department as being “instrumental” in locating the vehicles and the person of interest, Sutton said.
