One hospitalized after house fire

MINERAL RIDGE — A man is in critical condition after a house fire broke out around 8 a.m. Tuesday in the 3800 block of Edwards Street, according to Trumbull County 911 dispatchers.

Weathersfield fire Chief Tom Lambert said he was able to speak to the resident, who said he was sleeping when his dog woke him up and alerted him to the fire. The resident escaped the house through a window but burned his hands trying to save the dog. The dog did not survive.

The man was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and burns.

Lambert said the home is likely a total loss.

The State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the blaze, but Lambert said a space heater may have started it.
