Boardman man pleads guilty in fight with police
WARREN — A Boardman man pleaded guilty Thursday to two assault charges connected to a fight with police officers at a Liberty motel last April.
William P. McCawley, 36, of 91 Arlene Ave., appeared with his attorney, David L. Engler, before Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Ronald J. Rice, who ordered a background report be done on the defendant before sentencing. McCawley could face a maximum three-year prison sentence.
He is accused of kicking and punching two officers after an employee of the Rodeway Inn called Liberty police April 23 to remove a man from the premises. The man allegedly had jumped over the counter, coming at the motel worker.
The report also states officers tried to use a stun weapon and pepper spray on the defendant, which seemed to have no effect on him. Officers were called in from neighboring departments to help subdue the man, a report states.
Engler told the judge his client was apparently disoriented at the time, thinking there was a terriorist attack.
