Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Foundation’s distribution committee has announced grants totaling close to $2.3 million to more than 90 organizations.

Janice E. Strasfeld, executive director of the foundation, said grants were awarded to nonprofit organizations through the unrestricted, donor-advised, restricted and special interest funds as well as the support fund program.

Strasfeld said second quarter grants totaling $1,105,825 from the Youngstown Foundation’s unrestricted fund were awarded to the following nonprofit organizations in Youngstown that provide support designed to improve the quality of life for local residents: Economic Action Group, The English Center, Oak Hill Collaborative, SMARTS, Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown, Yellow Brick Place and the city of Youngstown.

She said the foundation provided more than $584,300 to local organizations committed to serving children with diagnosed disabilities. Awards were given to: SMARTS, Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries, Stambaugh Auditorium and Easter Seals.

More than 70 donor advised, restricted and special interest funds are administered by the Youngstown Foundation.

“Collectively, these funds distributed over $333,318 to 32 local, regional and national nonprofit organizations benefiting a wide variety of causes connected to the donor’s special interests, concerns or passions.” said Strasfeld.

Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio received $5,000 from the Mahoning Valley Sports Charities. MVSC fund was created from former LPGA tournament proceeds and is designated to assist charities Valley-wide.

Strasfeld said the support fund awarded close to $261,000 to agencies in the most recent quarter.

The support fund is a unique program that allows donors to maximize their charitable giving by providing a 10 percent add-on amount to qualified contributions to their favorite nonprofits.

The Youngstown Foundation is the largest community foundation in the Mahoning Valley, the oldest in the country and ranked in the top 100 nationally.
