Post 177 moving for new flagpole installation

CANFIELD — The new Canfield McDonald’s held a fundraiser to help the Canfield American Legion Post 177 move toward the goal of installing a flagpole on the north end of the Village Green.

The idea for having a flagpole was to honor those who served, both in military duty and first responders. The post originally wanted to place American flags on the two bridges over the turnpike.

“Our plans for flags along the bridges in Canfield have been rejected by the various responsible authorities,” said American Legion Commander Mike Kubitza. “The bridges themselves will still be prominently identified with signage visible from each travel direction.”

He said in lieu of flags along the bridges, Post 177 is now proceeding with erecting a 60-foot-tall flagpole on the north end of the village green, north of Main Street. In this location, the flag will be visible from the main northern gateway into the community.

“There will eventually be monuments at the base of the staff reflecting the constituencies being honored (armed forces, first responders, etc),” Kubitza said. “The Canfield City Council and Parks Department have approved the flagpole and its location and purchase orders have been placed. If all goes well, we will have a dedication on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2019.”
