WHAT: Board of education meeting Wednesday

PRESENT: Tim Gleason, Cheryl Basista, Mark Bodo, Joshua Garris and Aaron Wallace

The board:

• Accepted the retirement resignation of Marci Buchanan as library aide at Seaborn Elementary School effective Dec. 31 after 25 years. Buchanan, who is a member of the Mineral Ridge Historical Society, has presented programs in the schools on local history. Superintendent Damon Dohar said the position will be replaced;

• Approved high school art students field trip to Italy and Spain from May 25 to June 3, 2020;

• Approved the Youth Intensive Services Family Night 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 30 at Seaborn Elementary School;

• Heard from maintenance supervisor Lou Cappitti that all LED lighting has been installed in district buildings and he is keeping track of any energy cost savings. He said the district is already receiving around $1,000 per month in rebates with Ohio Edison for the new lighting;

• Heard from Seaborn Elementary Principal T.J. Koniowsky that local churches are working with the schools to provide backpacks filled with nonperishable food to needy children in kindergarten to sixth grade. He said the food pantry is housed at Mineral Ridge Church of Christ, but several churches contribute food items;

• Heard from Gleason that First Responders Night will be held at halftime of the high school basketball game on Dec. 7 to recognize local first responders for the work they do;

• Heard from Basista, the board’s representative to Trumbull Career and Technical Center, that the career center earned the honor of Apple’s Distinguished School for 2019 to 2022 for continuous innovation in literacy in the school environment.
