NOCC inmate convicted of assaulting officer

YOUNGSTOWN — A prison inmate was convicted Wednesday of assaulting a corrections officer at the private Northeast Ohio Correctional Center after a one-day trial in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.

Dakota M. Eaton, 25, who was sent to prison from Cuyahoga County in 2018 for aggravated robbery and felonious asault, could get three additional years in prison when he is sentenced later.

A Mahoning County jury found him guilty of assault but not guilty of obstructing official business and harassment with a bodily substance.

Aaron Meikle, assistant county prosecutor, said Eaton assaulted a corrections officer after the officer gave Eaton supplies, but Eaton wanted something else. Eaton refused to return to his pod, and the corrections officer used pepper spray on the inmate.

Eaton attacked the officer, taking him to the floor and “wailing” on him, Meikle said. Blood from Eaton got on another corrections officer’s pant leg and shoe, and prosecutors believed Eaton spit at the officer on purpose,
