Austintown trustees honor creator of 9/11 park

AUSTINTOWN — The 9/11 Memorial Park, which Trustee Jim Davis said has everything — including steel beams from the twin towers, a piece of the Pentagon, and dirt from Shanksville. Pa., where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed — will now have the one thing it was missing: a tribute to its creator, Patrick Connolly.

Connolly was honored Monday during a trustees meeting with a street sign bearing his name. The sign is scheduled to be hung at the entrance to the 911 Memorial Park today, deeming the driveway “Patrick Connolly Way.”

“We thank you, we thank you so much,” said Trustee Ken Carano.

Davis said the 9/11 park has drawn visitors from all over the country and has played host to a number of weddings, including one last weekend. For the past several years the park has been the site of a 9/11 memorial ceremony every Sept. 11.

At the Sept. 9 trustee meeting, Connolly spoke briefly about the park during an invitation to the memorial service.

“I hope everybody in this township enjoys that park,” Connolly said.

Monday, Connolly did not want to comment, but thanked the township for the sign. Several township firefighters and police officers, as well as a small crowd of residents, came to thank Connolly for honoring safety services with the memorial.

“We really want Pat to know what the 911 memorial means to the Austintown Community,” said Davis.
