Yemma exits Youngstown finance director’s race

YOUNGSTOWN — Mahoning County Treasurer Daniel R. Yemma has withdrawn his name from consideration as a Youngstown finance director candidate.

Instead, Yemma, a Struthers Democrat, said he’ll run next year for re-election.

Yemma’s announcement came Monday, a day after an article was published quoting Youngstown Mayor Jamael Tito Brown saying he wanted an assessment of the city’s water and wastewater funds to be finished before “moving forward on a finance director. I like to have things in order, and that’s the priority now.”

Brown has talked about not rushing the process since he took office as mayor Jan. 1, 2018. It’s been 10 months since an initial interview of four candidates, including Yemma, and there’s been no follow-up.

Yemma said he would “remain and continue to serve as the elected treasurer of Mahoning County. I look forward to continuing to work with Mayor Brown and the city in my capacity as county treasurer and chairman of the county land bank.”

Yemma was appointed to the position by the county Democratic Party in June 2011, replacing Lisa Antonini, who resigned after being charged — and eventually convicted — by the federal government with mail fraud related to her mailing a campaign finance report that failed to disclose a $3,000 gift.

Yemma was Brown’s boss in the treasurer’s office before the latter was elected mayor in 2017. Brown worked as Yemma’s director of operations.

The three remaining finalists are:

l Kyle Miasek, the city’s interim finance director since January 2018 and deputy finance director since 2006.

l Peter M. Rancatore Jr, a former city of Toledo finance director.

l Henry A. Staven, who’s held several public-sector positions in nine states.

The job pays $83,949 annually.

Brown said he hoped the candidates were still interested in the job. “If not, we’ll continue the search when the time comes,” he said.
