Man found with homemade explosives

BOARDMAN — Police found homemade explosives and crack cocaine when they checked on a man who was slumped over the wheel of his car Tuesday morning.

Joseph Barnes, 30, was found unresponsive in his car in the area of Market Street and Colwyn Court around 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, according to Tribune Chronicle news partner WKBN-TV 27.

When Barnes woke up, his speech was slurred, and he handed police a Visa card instead of his driver’s license.

He told police five homemade explosives were “for fun to blow up” and were made by “a hillbilly” about two years ago.

The Youngstown Bomb Squad responded and said the explosives were highly unstable and could have ignited with a spark.

Barnes was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle under the influence, failure to maintain assured clear distance ahead, drug abuse and possession of drug paraphernalia, drug abuse instruments and dangerous ordnance, according to WKBN.
