Arrest made in second Youngstown homicide

YOUNGSTOWN — A man has been arrested in the Friday night homicide at 2737 Griselda Ave. on the South Side.

A news release from the Youngstown Police Department states Kenneth Carter, 34, was taken into custody Monday in the shooting death of a 42-year-old man, whose name has not yet been released.

Youngstown police officers were called to Griselda at 7:36 p.m. Friday for a person who was shot, according to a news release. Officers saw the man lying near the front doorway with multiple gunshot wounds to the body and began life-saving measures until the arrival of ambulance personnel. However, the man died at the scene.

Carter is being held without bond at the Mahoning County jail and is expected to be arraigned Tuesday.

It was the second homicide in the city this year with the first being the late Jan. 10 shooting death of Brandon Ogden, 27, who was found in the 2500 block of Ohio Avenue on the North Side after police were called there shortly after 11 p.m. for a man who had been shot and a suspect who fled the scene.

Lake Milton police apprehended Jonathan S. Simmons, 29, later that night when he was pulled over for a traffic violation and officers learned Simmons was wanted by Youngstown police in the Ogden homicide. Simmons was jailed early Jan. 11.

Simmons is in the Mahoning County jail in lieu of a $1 million bond. He was set for a preliminary hearing in Youngstown Municipal Court last week, but it was reset for 9:30 a.m. Thursday because the court was closed because of weather conditions Jan. 21, the day it was supposed to take place.

Starting at $2.99/week.
