Fri. 10:45 a.m.: Boy, 13, to be arraigned today in November shooting death of 14-year-old boy

YOUNGSTOWN — A boy, 13, will be arraigned today on a murder charge with a gun specification in Mahoning County Juvenile Court in the shooting death of Logan Taylor, 14.

The boy is now in the custody of the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center.

Logan died Nov. 13 after being shot at 11:30 a.m. Nov. 11 in the 200 block of East Lucius Avenue on the South Side.

The Youngstown Police Department said at the the time that the shooting pointed to negligence but the police department would not be rushing the investigation.

The Youngstown Police Detective Division released a statement this morning saying that the police department met with the Mahoning County Prosecutor’s Office, Juvenile Division, to present evidence Logan’s death.

The police department detective division has been investigating the case and analyzing the available evidence in conjunction with the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office, Cuyahoga County forensic pathologist, Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the county prosecutor’s office, the release states.

According to the release, after reviewing all evidence that has been gathered and analyzed on this incident, the prosecutor’s office determined that the charge of murder was most appropriate in the case. The release does not give the charged juvenile’s name or age, but a juvenile court spokesman said the charged juvenile is 13.

“Regardless of any criminal charges, the City of Youngstown and the entire community continues to mourn the loss of all young men and women who lose their lives to gun violence and accidents,” the release states.

“The primary and secondary trauma that befalls the families in these tragic events must not be forgotten and the city continues to offer support and resources to all of those involved.”

The release adds that the city “and our community partners continue to advocate for, and cannot stress enough the importance of, firearm safety and responsibility in the home. Education, awareness and honest conversations about firearm safety from adults to our children are paramount.”

Logan was in the eighth grade at East Middle School in the city, according to his obituary

Another child was killed Oct. 22, less than a month earlier, also involving a gun in the city.

De’Vonte Ja’Ton Housely Jr., 7, died Oct. 22 after being shot at a home in the 300 block of Marmion Avenue on the South Side.

Officers began life-saving measures as they arrived, and an ambulance crew transported the boy to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to Youngstown police.

Police said they believe that death was accidental.
