Mon. 10:15 a.m.: Youngstown records second homicide in two days

YOUNGSTOWN — After having a low number of homicides during the first eight months of the year, there has been a spike in killings over the weekend.

The Youngstown Police Department is investigating the death of a man in the first block of South South Bruce Street on the East Side early Monday.

Police were called there at 12:31 a.m. for a shooting and found the man who had been shot, outside near a vehicle. Ambulance personnel pronounced him dead.

The man’s age was not given, but a Youngstown Police press release indicated he is Hispanic. “No suspect(s) and no motive have been established,” it states.

The police department’s detective division, crime scene unit and the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office came to the scene to begin an investigation.

The killing is the 10th of this year in Youngstown. The city just recorded its ninth homicide early Saturday when a man, 26, was found shot to death and lying in the grass of a vacant lot in the area of New York and Kensington avenues on the North Side. Police were called there a 2:24 a.m.

He had multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. Ambulance personnel declared him dead at the scene. The two killing locations are about three miles apart.

The East Side killing is located near Himrod Avenue and less than a mile southwest of East High School. Youngstown had 23 homicides in 2022.

If anyone has information about the killing, they are asked to call the Youngstown Police Department Detective division at 330-742-8911 or Crime Stoppers at 330-746-CLUE. Tips remain anonymous, and a reward may be available.
