Sun. noon: Juvenile with handgun among 11 arrested after incident at Canfield Fair

CANFIELD – A 14-year-old with a handgun was among 11 people arrested following a fight late Saturday at the Canfield Fair, according to the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called out after reports of gunfire being heard and several individuals involved in a dispute that begin inside the fairgrounds and continued into the parking lot by Gate C. Mahoning County Sheriff Jerry Greene said this morning that the fight broke out after 8 p.m. and involved both young adults and juveniles inside the fairgrounds. It continued in a parking lot by Gate C.

Greene said seven juveniles and four adults were arrested and are facing charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. He said one 14-year-old juvenile with a handgun was arrested and taken to the Juvenile Justice Center.

Signs posted at the fairgrounds indicate weapons are prohibited from being brought on the property, Greene said.

Greene said two vehicles in the parking lot by Gate C had bullet holes in them. He said several witnesses and people at the fair had reported hearing gunshots.

Greene said the believes what happened Saturday evening was an isolated incident.

The incident remains under investigation.

Extra patrols and officers are being pumped up at the fairgrounds today as fair events and activities continue as scheduled.

He said police presence also will be escalated as a precaution on Labor Day.

Canfield Fair officials indicated to law enforcement all events are set to go on as scheduled today and Monday.

In a statement released this morning by fair organizers, the Canfield Fair Board stated it will “not tolerate conduct like that which occurred Saturday night and will take all steps necessary to ensure the safety of all those attending and working at the Fair including an enhanced police presence for the remainder of this year’s Fair.”

The fair board thanked law enforcement agencies for their work to keep the fair safe.

“As the incident of Saturday night is the subject of criminal investigation, the Board will have no further comment at this time.”
