5:05 p.m. Monday: Tornado verified in Boardman Sunday

A deluge that dropped more than four inches of rain on parts of the Mahoning Valley Sunday, including a verified tornado touching down in Boardman, making fairgoers run for cover, canceling holiday events and motorists navigating through flooded roadways.

Monday morning dawned drier but the threat of rain still existed, with chances of thunderstorm continuing into this morning, according to the National Weather Service..

The flash-flood warning remained in effect for the Valley until 11 p.m. Monday. Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations, the weather service warned. However, climate data shows all local river readings are well below flood stage.

According to the weather service, a brief, small tornado touched down in Boardman at 5:44 p.m. Sunday.

Classified as an EF-Zero, the weakest level of a tornado, the tornado brought 80-mile-per-hour winds with a width of 15 yards and a path of 127 yards. The damage included shingles coming off a commercial building on York Avenue near the Southern Park Mall.
