Youngstown: City plows operating ’24/7′

The Youngstown buildings and roads commissioner said this afternoon that 13 city snow plows are operating “24/7,” cleared snow from the downtown and most of the main roads and expressways and were hoping to clean up side streets “later this evening.”

Kevin Flinn said he thinks the city got about 12 inches of snow, some of it wet, causing an icy layer under the snow.

“There’s been cars abandoned throughout the city, so we’ve been having tow working around those also,” he said. Most are cars that just got stuck while traveling on the streets “just because of the depth of the accumulations,” he said.

Mahoning County Engineer Pat Ginnetti, meanwhile, said county road plows cleared all of its streets by 3 p.m. Monday and would be back out at 3 a.m. Tuesday with hopes of having them clear again for the Tuesday-morning commute.

Ginnetti said he thinks the county got at least 12 inches of snow, more in some places. This snow storm featured some wet conditions last night, but the snow was mostly dry, he said.

“It is obviously a major inconvenience and hard to navigate when it’s coming down faster than we can get it off of the roads, but it’s better than freezing rain,” he said.
