Wed. 10:25 a.m.: Two defendants plead not guilty by reason of insanity

YOUNGSTOWN — Two defendants pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity today during their arraignments in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.

The attorney for Jabrae L. Perry, 44, entered the plea to aggravated murder and murder in the shooting deaths of two people in a home on Salt Springs Road Aug. 24.

If convicted of the offenses, Perry could get the death penalty. He is accused of killing Ayanna Mills, 49, and her son, Brandon Bell, 28.

Also pleading not guilty by reason of insanity was Damian Cessna, 24 of Boardman, on felonious assault, obstructing official business and aggravated menacing for an incident that led a Boardman police officer to shoot Cessna multiple times.

The confrontation was at 1 a.m. July 13 at South Avenue and Mathews Road in which Cessna reportedly had a baseball bat and a knife and threatened the officer.
