Man arrested in fatal hit-skip involving boy

LISBON — A Salineville man was jailed in Columbiana County accused of hitting and killing a teenage bicyclist.

Donald E. White, 64, was arrested at his home on charges of aggravated vehicular homicide and leaving the scene, both third-degree felony charges, after his 1987 Chevrolet Silverado struck the 13-year-old New Springfield youth at 9:07 p.m. Saturday from behind while northbound on state Route 164 in Fairfield Township.

The victim then was ejected from his bicycle and was pronounced dead after being transported to Salem Regional Medical Center. White was not injured; however, a Lisbon post spokesman said that illegal narcotics are believed to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Assisting at the scene were the Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office and both Leetonia fire and EMS.

The teenager was transported to Salem Regional Medical Center, where he later was pronounced dead.

White just had been in Columbiana County Municipal Court last month, where he had been convicted of failure to control for a Sept. 11 crash involving a 1997 blue pickup truck near state Route 344 and Beeson Mill Road in Fairfield Township.

If convicted, White faces up to six years in prison and up to $20,000 fine plus imposition of any previously suspended jail time if he was still on probation.
