School gets $10,000 donation from DeBartolo York for spring trip

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown Rayen Early College High School students will take an educational and cultural trip to New York City this spring, thanks to donations from area philanthropists and organizations.

The largest donation, $10,000, came from Denise DeBartolo York, Youngstown-area native and owner and co-chair of the San Francisco 49ers football team.

In a letter included with the donation, Florence Swierz, Mrs. York’s assistant, noted: “Mrs. York was impressed by what you are doing and trying to accomplish in Youngstown Rayen Early College High School, educating students not only for a high school diploma but with an associate degree from Youngstown State University.”

“The scholars and staff at YREC extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mrs. York for her kindness and generosity,” said Monica Jones, the school’s principal.

Infocision contributed $6,700 and the Jewish Foundation and Burdman Foundation donated $1,300 for the trip.

During the spring excursion, students will participate in several site visits including Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, the World Trade Center Observation Memorial Site and the 911 Underground Museum and Virtual Reality Center. They’ll also take in a Broadway performance of “Hamilton.”

The cost of the trip is about $650 per student with roughly 90 students and 10 chaperones participating. The $65,000 total includes the cost of transportation and accommodations and will allow participating students the opportunity to learn history first hand and to cultivate an appreciation of the arts.
