Mon. 11:30 a.m.: Ten arrested in so-called ‘riot’ at Belmont Pines

LIBERTY – Ten girls were taken to the Trumbull County Juvenile Justice Center late Sunday after several law enforcement agencies responded to what was called in one report “a riot” in the female section of Belmont Pines Hospital.

According to a sheriff report, the call came about 10:30 p.m. with police units from Liberty, Hubbard City, Vienna and sheriff’s deputies responding to a situation involving about 20 females. According to the report, officers were able to detain some suspects involved but others were still causing a scene “and the situation was still very chaotic.”

The officers were eventually able to control the residents. According to information gleaned at the scene, a few residents started a fight and then other juveniles jumped in, starting to damage facility doors in an apparent attempt to gain control of the building.

According to its website, Belmont Pines Hospital, a 51,000-square foot facility, is the largest freestanding children’s behavioral health hospital in the region, providing in-patient behavioral health services to those ages 5 through 18.
