Mon. 10:47 a.m.: Man shot to death outside Niles home

NILES — One Niles man was shot to death and another wounded shortly before midnight Sunday, police reported.

Thomas J. Carr, 39, of Niles, died of multiple gunshot wounds, and Dylan L. Hilty, 19, of Niles was wounded in the shooting at 109 W. First St., police Chief Jay Holland reported in a news release.

A third male was apprehended unharmed, police said. His name was not released.

Police were dispatched to 109 W. First St. late Sunday on a report of males in the yard causing a disturbance. While officers were on the way, more calls came in that shots had been fired, the report states.

Police found Carr dead on the property.

Hilty had run to his own residence, also on West First Street, and was taken into custody there, police said.

Investigators found that three males had gone to the house at 109 W. First, caused a disturbance, and that a juvenile male inside the house fired upon the group, Holland’s report states.

“An investigation is still being conducted with the assistance of the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation and the Trumbull County Prosecutor’s Office,” Holland stated this morning. “Any decision on criminal charges from this incident will be made in conjunction with the Trumbull County Prosecutor’s Office.”
