Tue. 9:29 a.m.: Police: Niles woman shot man who kicked in her door

NILES — A Youngstown man is listed in critical condition after being shot early this morning.

According to a news release from Niles police, the 27-year-old was found at 181 Royal Mall Drive with a gunshot wound to his torso. When officers arrived, they found the door to the residence was kicked in, a shell casing and a gun in the victim’s waistband.

The release states the shooting victim lied about where the shooting took place, saying it happened at a local bar. But officers said further investigation shows that he was shot by a woman with whom he has a child.

“It appears the male came to the residence with ill intentions, kicking the back door in to force his entry into the apartment,” the release states.

The woman and a small child were in an upstairs bedroom when the man came up the stairs with a firearm. The woman pulled out her own gun and shot him once in the torso, the police report states.

The lie about the bar was thought up following the call to police, officers said.

The man was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital and is in “serious condition,” the report states.

The case remains under investigation but no charges have been filed against the woman.

“We will meet with the prosecutor when the investigation is complete to decide on who and what will be charged,” Niles Police Chief Jay Holland said. “She faces no charges and was released at this time.”
