YOUNGSTOWN — Mayor Jamael Tito Brown has fired Robin Lees as police chief, effective Jan. 15.
Lees said he recently spoke to Brown, who said he wanted to go in a different direction at the police department.
“He was looking for a different approach,” Lees said. “He’s looking for a change in direction is the best way I could describe it.”
Lees said he planned to leave as chief at the end of the year before his ouster.
Lees joined the city force in December 1978, and rose to lieutenant before retiring in early 2011.
Shortly after John A. McNally was elected mayor, he asked Lees to return as chief, which he did in January 2014.
When Brown defeated McNally in the 2017 election, he retained Lees as his chief.
Brown couldn’t immediately be reached to comment today. But Lees said the mayor would have a statement later today.
