Tues. 11:45 a.m.: Mahoning County issues stay-at-home health advisory

YOUNGSTOWN – Mahoning County health officials are issuing a county-wide stay-at-home advisory in light of surging local COVID-19 numbers.

The announcement came moments ago during a joint virtual meeting held moments ago that included health officials from Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties. Mahoning County’s action is a joint effort between Mahoning County commissioners and the county health commissioner.

The Mahoning County advisory does not require people to stay home but says people should stay at home “where possible,” to limit travel outside of Ohio and only leave home to go to work or school or for essential needs such as seeking medical care, going to the grocery store or pharmacy, picking up food or receiving deliveries.

Trumbull County Board of Health is expected also to enact a county-wide stay-at-home order when it meets in special session this afternoon, officials have confirmed. Columbiana County is not expected to enact a similar stay-at-home order.

During this morning’s virtual press conference, officials went to great lengths to stress to residents the importance of being cautious during this holiday weekend, especially limiting the number of people gathering for Thanksgiving meals in order to slow the skyrocketing numbers of local COVID-19 cases.

The joint message from Mahoning County commissioners and Mahoning County Public Health this morning asks the community to “mask up,” “stay home,” and “limit gatherings” to combat the spread of COVID-19.

Other Ohio counties issuing similar messages today are Franklin, Cuyahoga, Hamilton, Summit, Montgomery and Lucas counties. Mahoning County officials join with those counties regularly to discuss the virus, Mahoning County Commissioner David Ditzler said at this morning’s county commissioners meeting.

This is a developing story. Check back here for more details as they unfold, or read Wednesday’s newspaper print edition.
