Mon. 9:36 a.m.: Former mayor Sammarone gets probation with guilty plea
YOUNGSTOWN — Former Youngstown Mayor Charles Sammarone pleaded guilty this morning to two felony counts of tampering with records and was placed on probation for five years.
Sammarone had been charged with 14 counts with the most serious charges dismissed as part of a plea bargain. That included engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity and nine counts of bribery, all felonies.
Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge Maureen Sweeney put Sammarone on five years of probation and 30 days of community service.
Sammarone was convicted of not reporting rental income derived from owning a condo in Florida on his 2012 and 2013 Ohio Ethics Commission financial disclosure forms.
John Shultz said the convictions were minor and prosecutors had a weak case on the other charges. He added prosecutors had no evidence that Sammarone bribed anyone because the former mayor never did that.
Sammarone apologized for his crimes.
