Thu. 11:31 a.m.: Youngstown fatal shooting victim identified

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County Coroner’s Office has identified the man found shot to death Wednesday in a home on Woodcrest Avenue as Lavante Perry, 24, of Woodcrest Avenue.

An autopsy will be performed by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the cause and manner of his death remains under investigation by the coroner’s office and Youngstown Police Department.

Perry pleaded guilty in October to felonious assault in connection to the Jan. 24 death of  Crystal Hernandez, 24. He was scheduled for sentencing Jan. 8.Perry faced a minimum of three years in prison because a gun was involved in the commission of the felony.

Perry and Gabriel Smith, 20, are were accused of shooting at the men who were charged in the killing of Smith’s girlfriend, Crystal Hernandez, 24.

Police said six men were looking for Smith and Perry after an initial shooting Jan. 24 and shot up Hernandez’s apartment on McBride Street as she was holding her sleeping 2-year-old son. Hernandez was fatally shot in the neck as she shielded the child, police report states. The report states Hernandez was pronounced dead by first responders. The boy, who was not harmed, was found asleep on the victim’s chest, the report states. Police said the initial shootings were over stolen drugs and money.
